not believe al gore's excuse for president obama's performance at the debate. grapevine is next >> bret: now some fresh pickings from the political grapevine. we've looked at the presidential debate from a number of different angles since it ended. and so have the other networks, of course. as we told you earlier, pundits and polls seem to agree that president obama lost the debate to governor romney. governor romney having a good night. but some of the possible reasons that the president was off his game are raising some eyebrows. here is former vice president al gore. >> obama arrived in denver at 2:00 p.m. today just a few hours before the debate started. romney did his debate prep in denver. when go to 5,000 feet and you only have a few hours to adjust, i don't know. maybe -- >> bret: so again, the former vice president said it was the amount do you do. bob woodward, who published a behind the scenes book about president obama has another theory. >> something happened. maybe in foreign affairs, they got some intelligence report or something -- who knows? but i think as the o

today. i don't think it has entered the presidential campaign debate. i don't think it will change undecided voters' minds. it will be significant if obama is re-elected next year. >> bret: rick? >> if it was going to be just the economy, stupid, we would have seen that in the polling. people factored in, to large extent what they feel about the economy and they have decided either you go with the president or you're not. that is not enough. i think we were stupid to think it's just the economy, stupid. the through line with the stories that you cite there is an argument here to make about the president's management and leadership. that is the thing that unites all we talk about with the foreign policy and domestic policy and fast and furious. if romney were to make the turn, natural closing place for the argument to be. i've been making the case about the economy for yea year-and-a-half. but it's more than that. that is the romney to look for in debate stage wednesday night. you have to be aggressive and pivot point of the campaign. there hasn't been storylines breaking romney's w

independents. if he comes out presidential and goes on the offense with obama there is potential for a lot of upside for him. >> bret: we all have pollitis watching polls. but there is a new one today. the "wall street journal"/nbc poll puts the race at 4% for president obama. vi% for governor romney. if you look at the real clear politics average of polls, this is roughly about that from september 25 to octobe october 2. if you go to the "wall street journal" poll about the economy, approval, how is president obama doing handling the economy? vi% approve. 51% disapprove. brit, while right track/wrong track is narrowing there is still real negative numbers in the polls for president obama. >> well, for romney to have a chance, there better be. because that is the issue that is central. he had been gaining ground on the issue in a way a lot of people thought wasn't possible. if he has begun to retreat, romney needs that to happen. he needs to emerge from the whole campaign, the debates part of them as the person with the ability and the stronger plan for the economy. because this is not
